Email Aliases
Creating Email Aliases
An Alias is a reference on the server where email can be sent that will redirect email to the account or email address you specify. To create an alias on your IMail server, please follow the instructions below.
- Open your Web browser and type in:
http://emailadmin.domain_name or
http://emailadmin.myhosting.com - Click the Login link.
- Type in your Admin email address for the username
- Type in your Password for the password
- Click on the "Aliases" folder on the left side of the page
- Click on "Add Alias"
- Complete the fields accordingly.
- New Alias Name: This is the actual alias name, and is the address to which the sender will direct mail. For example, if you wanted to receive mail sent to info@domain_name you would type info in the field.
- Resolves To: This is the e-mail address(es) or user account(s) to which any email will be routed. If the alias represents an existing user on your IMail server, simply type in their UserID (the part before the @ symbol in their email address). If the alias represents an e-mail address, simply type the e-mail address into the field. If you want an alias to resolve to more than one user, simply separate each entry on a new line.
- Click Save.
Replying to Email Aliases
You do not have as much flexibility with aliases, as an alias will only forward the e-mail to a valid e-mail account. It does not keep the mail on the server for an alias. The best way to resolve your issue may be to create the user in the IMAIL (8181) port, as a valid e-mail account.
To create a valid user in IMail:
- Open your Web browser and type the following in the address bar:
http://emailadmin.domain_name or
http://emailadmin.myhosting.com - Now you will need to Log in:
- Type in your Admin email address for the username.
- Type in your Password for the password.
- Click Add User under the Manage Users section.
- Enter the desired User ID. This will be the email account. Ex. entering "joe" as the User ID will create the email account joe@yourdomain.com
- Enter and Confirm the desired Password for this account.
- You have just created an email account. On the left hand side you will see your newly created account under the Users folder.
NOTE: If you have the mail forwarded and then reply to the e-mail from the forwarded account, it will reflect in the reply to address from the forwarded account. myhosting.com does not support Yahoo Mail, however, you can probably go into the Yahoo Mail Preferences and/or set up a POP e-mail account and change your Reply To address.
Creating Domain Alias Email Accounts
Domain aliases do not have their own email management site. To create email addresses for you domain alias you have to set them up through the email management site for your primary domain account.
If you want an alias email such as name@alias.com you would create the address name@primarydomain.com in the email management site for the primary domain.
This means that any accounts that you already have for the primary domain account can receive mail for the alias domain. So if you already have admin@primarydomain.com you automatically have admin@alias.com.
Any email sent to domain alias addresses will be forwarded to the corresponding domain address. Email sent to admin@alias.com would be forwarded to the admin@primarydomain.com mailbox.
End-User Management of Mailbox Settings
End-users are able to manage the individual features of their own mailbox using http://emailadmin.myhosting.com or http://emailadmin.your-domain.com where your-domain.com is your actual domain name. These features include:
- Profile
- Password (although the administrator can always override and take over the email account)
- Mail Forwarding
- Inbound Rules
- Vacation Message
- AutoResponder
- Mailboxes (e.g. spam)
- SMTP (enable/disable)
This Web address can safely be given out to your employees so that they can manage ONLY their own email account.
